Oilfield Accident - Workplace Safety

VerdictSearch logo

The jury verdict in this case was the 6th largest verdict in Texas for a workplace safety case in 2009 as reported by Verdict Search

We obtained a significant jury verdict after a 6 day trial for the 9 year old son of an oilfield worker who was killed. Additionally, we negotiated an additional substantial settlement with the deceased’s employer based on claims of gross negligence.

We were hired to represent the boy long after the case had been filed. At the time we began representing the boy, the total offer from both Defendants (which were the deceased’s employer and the drilling operator) to resolve the boy’s claims was a little over 10% of the gross amounts ultimately received on the verdict and in settlement.

Texas Oilfield Tragedy Attorneys

Oil and gas drilling is dangerous and fast paced with long hours working on or near large, complex machinery, often in adverse conditions. Oilfield workers suffer injuries on the job at a high rate and these injuries can result in serious injuries and long term disabilities. Many of the incidents are the result of negligence, improper training, defective equipment, or insufficient safety features. Whatever the cause of the injuries, it is important for oilfield tragedy victims to obtain the compensation that they need for their medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

Injuries Sustained from Oilfield Tragedies

In such a dangerous line of work, injuries in an oilfield tend to be more devastating than a typical workers’ compensation claim. Oilfield injuries can include:

  • Severe burns
  • Electrocution
  • Broken bones
  • Head and neck injuries
  • Loss of limbs
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals and gases

Causes of Oilfield Injuries

Drilling for oil requires the use of heavy equipment, high speed machinery and the use of combustibles. Oilfield tragedies are often catastrophic, resulting in serious injuries. Some common causes of oilfield incidents include:

  • Equipment failure
  • Drilling rig accidents
  • Faulty communication between operators and employees
  • Inadequately trained employees
  • Inefficient safeguards and rushed work environments
  • Violations of safety policies and procedures
